YBhg Dato' Hj. Zainal Rampak
Chairman Board of Diretors, Kolej WIT
A career trade unionist with over forty years of experience, Dato' Zainal Rampak is no stranger to the nation's human resource industry as well as the global labour scene.
He first entered the trade union movement more than forty years ago when he joined the Transport Workers Union (TWU) as its Organizing Secretary. Being a grass roots labour activist, he rose from the ranks and is now the TWU General Secretary.
Zainal's involvement in the national labour scene first began when he was elected Chairman of the Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTU) Youth Division in 1972, and later progressed to become President in 1985, a position he held for two decades.
In the global arena, Zainal displayed impressive leadership for Malaysia abroad during his stint as Youth Coordinator Asia Pacific Region of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (IFTU). Under the International Labour Organization (ILO) Governing Body, Zainal traveled to monitor aid projects in recipient countries. He was the Asia-Pacific Coordinator for its Worker's Group.
Upon noting that engineering plays a crucial role in any nation building, Zainal as Chairman of Kolej WIT management committee intelligently identified the college's target market as Malaysia's main socio-economic group - the middle and lower income community. His strong belief that no one should be deprived of quality education has led to the successful nurturing of many young, skilled technical workers for the development of Malaysia's industries, thus upgrading the country's overall quality of life.
Zainal's local and international accolades include:
- Vice President and Secretary General of the ASEAN Trade Union Council (ATUC)
- Executive Board of the ICFTU's Asian and Pacific Regional Organization (ICFTU-APRO)
- A member of the Upper House (Senate) of the Malaysian Parliament
